CLINICAL FOCUS:
- Psychological and Neuropsychological Testing with children, adolescents, and adults for the assessment/diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and co-existing problems (e.g., learning disabilities, depression and anxiety disorders, low self-esteem)
- Individual psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with AD/HD and co-existing problems (e.g., relationship/family issues, school and career related issues, organizational difficulties, depression and anxiety)
TREATMENT APPROACH
- A neurocognitive psychotherapy approach within a cognitive-behavioral, developmental, and sociocultural framework is used to address AD/HD and associated co-existing problems. This is a structured approach that uses cognitive-behavioral and cognitive rehabilitation therapy techniques and understands/takes into consideration the impact of developmental/physiological, psychological and sociocultural factors (e.g., gender, ethnicity) on a person.
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on changing thoughts and attitudes that may lead to anxiety, depression, and self-defeating behaviors. The use of concrete goals for behavioral change is also involved. Cognitive rehabilitation focuses on improving cognitive functions (e.g., use of stimulant medication, healthy habits), developing compensatory strategies (e.g., using a coach, assistive technologies), and restructuring the environment (e.g., developing an AD/HD friendly home and work environments).
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- I have enjoyed working with children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations within residential, hospital, school and university, community, and long-term care facilities. Because of my opportunities to work with various populations in multiple settings, I’ve treated and assessed a wide variety of clinical issues, including AD/HD, depression, anxiety, adjustment problems, physical and sexual abuse, family and relationship issues, as well as career and academic related problems.
- My training and experience has been in providing individual (including play therapy) and group psychotherapy, psychiatric emergency room evaluations, trauma evaluations, and consultation with other mental health and medical providers, teachers and parents. Additionally, I have had experience with conducting psychological and neuropsychological testing with young children through geriatric populations within inpatient and outpatient settings. These assessments have focused on evaluating for learning disabilities, AD/HD, developmental disabilities (e.g., fetal alcohol syndrome), executive dysfunction (problems with planning and organizing), dementia, problems associated with traumatic brain injury, and emotional and behavioral problems.
