Susy Thomas, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist
Maryland License # 3596

To contact Dr. Thomas, please call 301-562-8448, Ext. 22.

Dr. Thomas has over eleven years of experience testing individuals and has completed advanced training in the assessment of children and adolescents while training at university hospitals at Harvard Medical School, Cornell Medical School and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.   She specializes in the evaluation of children and adolescents in order to assist them in identifying and better understanding their learning strengths and weaknesses.  Dr. Thomas’ comprehensive testing evaluations include cognitive, neuropsychological and educational assessments that focus on clarifying the role of possible attentional problems, learning disorders and executive function deficits.  Since she works primarily with children and adolescents, Dr. Thomas conducts all her evaluations on Saturdays, allowing parents and children flexibility with scheduling while not missing school or work.

Dr.   Thomas also specializes in completing cognitive assessments required for admissions testing (e.g., WPPSI-III or WISC-IV) for preschoolers and school-aged children applying to area independent schools, helping parents better understand their child’s potential as they prepare for the coming school year.  She has particular expertise in working with pre-school aged children, having worked in infant and toddler and preschool programs at Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University Medical School.  Dr. Thomas has completed advanced post-doctoral training through the Department of Neuropsychology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the assessment of preschool-aged children, where she later worked as a Staff Psychologist for 4 ½ years.  At Kennedy Krieger, Dr. Thomas provided consultations to individuals and families, research teams, and other departments including the International Adoptions Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Comprehensive evaluations with Dr. Thomas include an in-depth diagnostic interview with the child’s parents/caretakers, review of appropriate records and an extensive battery of cognitive, neuropsychological and educational tests designed to assess the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Once testing is completed, Dr. Thomas conducts an analysis of test findings, which is presented in a written report to the family during the feedback session. The goals of the report and feedback session are to provide the family with a solid understanding of test findings, applicable diagnoses, recommendations for intervention and strategies for action.

Dr. Thomas advises families in learning how to advocate on their child’s behalf, especially when the child is faced with challenges in the school setting. She also assists families with recommendations for consultation with professionals in other disciplines as needed (e.g., speech therapy, medication consultation, occupational therapy, tutoring and/or coaching).

Dr. Thomas works closely with other members of our clinic’s staff, and has been working with Center Director, Dr. Kathleen Nadeau, since October 2000, to help provide the highest quality of care to our clients.  As the mother of three daughters, she particularly enjoys working with girls, which is also a specialty of the Chesapeake ADHD Center.
