Psychotherapy, Counseling and Other Behavioral Treatments for AD/HD

When the treatment of AD/HD is discussed medications are often the first thing people think of. And while medication can be very effective for distractibility, inattention, focus and impulsivity, many of the symptoms and co-occurring concerns of AD/HD are neglected when medication is the only treatment used.

Here at the Chesapeake center we offer a variety of behavioral treatment options in order to learn better life management and executive functioning skills, to re-evaluate and challenge negative thoughts that may have developed from struggling with the symptoms of AD/HD. We treat the whole individual to help them feel and function better.

Individual psychotherapy

Our treatment approach is tailored to the needs of each individual. Psychotherapy at the Center is based on Center Director Kathleen Nadeau's neuro-cognitive psychotherapy model. Neuro-cognitive psychotherapy focuses on setting and reaching accomplishable goals, developing skills for daily life management and independent living, and focusing on ones strengths to improve self-concept. We also focus on building executive functioning skills such as organization, planning, time-management and study skills. (more information on Dr. Nadeau's neuro-cognitive psychotherapy model)

Children & Adolescents: Older children and teens may be seen in individual therapy to help them better understand and accept their challenges related to learning or attention issues and to help build positive self-concepts. (more information)

College Students: We provide assistance with college selection, guiding students and parents to make choices based on the student's needs and preferences. (more information)

Career/Workplace Consultations: Kathleen Nadeau, center director, a pioneer in career and workplace issues for adults with AD/HD, works closely with the Center staff to provide career and workplace consultations regarding problems in a current job, or efforts to change jobs or careers. We work with people of all ages about workplace issues, helping young adults to make career choices that focus on their strengths and interests as well as helping mid-career adults either function better in their current job or assess whether a new job or even new career focus is needed. (more information)

Adults: Our approach is structured to help adults develop the confidence and skills necessary for successful daily life management. Therapy often focuses on setting obtainable immediate and long-term goals, making decisions about education or career, and making positive changes to ones lifestyle to obtain the structure and supports needed to succeed. Our therapy focuses both on internal issues (feelings, self-concept, relationships) and the external (creating and environment in which adults can thrive with ADHD). (more information)

Older adults: Retirement from the structure of work life can be particularly challenging for adults with AD/HD. We offer guidance specifically focused on helping adults prepare for retirement as well as helping retired adults build structure and focus into their daily lives. (more information)

Family therapy and Parent Guidance

We assist parents and teens in developing better communication and problem-solving skills. Typically, we involve parents in the treatment to provide guidance in helping them address family difficulties with a constructive, problem-solving approach. Often, especially in the case of children, we focus on helping parents learn how best to help their child feel and function better. (more information)

Group therapy

We offer many groups and seminars for children and adults. Some examples are groups for young adults with AD/HD, social skills development, and parenting children with AD/HD. (more information)

Coaching

AD/HD Coaching is a structured, supportive, practical approach that can help individuals with AD/HD develop daily life management skills, improve time management, and learn ways to set reasonable goals and then follow-through on the steps to reach those goals. (more information)

Professional Organizing

Several highly trained professional organizers are affiliated with the Chesapeake Center. They are experienced in assisting people of all ages with ADHD to create and maintain better order in all areas of their lives. Often a coach and professional organizer will work in tandem to help establish new systems of order that can help those with ADHD function more effectively in their daily lives. (more information)

Cogmed
