Scheduling One-time Consultations
One-time consultations regarding ADHD and related conditions can be scheduled with Center Director, Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D. for children, adolescents or adults. Such consultations are scheduled for a minimum of 2.0 hours. Why someone might seek a one-time consultation:
A consultation may be desired for a number of reasons:
Sending records and information in advance of your consultation
One-time consultations are most effective when information has been mailed or emailed to Kathleen Nadeau in advance, for her review. It is also helpful for the client or parents of the child in question to complete intake forms located on our website under “appointments.” For clients with a long medical/psychological/educational record, there will be an additional charge for time spent in records review by Dr. Nadeau. Time for records review is time well-spent and will make the consultation more productive. Child and Adolescent Consultations
In most instances, parents should bring their child or adolescent to the consultation so that part of the consultation time can be spend interviewing and observing the child or adolescent. If there are reasons why this may not be desirable, this should be discussed in advance with Kathleen Nadeau. Parents should make non-returnable copies of all pertinent records (medical, psychological, educational) available to Kathleen Nadeau several days in advance of the consultation for her review. In the case of lengthy records, there will be an additional charge for time spent in records review.
Parents are also encouraged to write or email (kathleennadeau@chesapeakeadd.com) detailing their immediate concerns and informing Kathleen Nadeau of information about the child, teen, and family that has a bearing on the child or teen’s current situation. It is helpful to outline in advance the questions that you hope will be answered during the course of this consultation. Parents should complete and forward in advance the child intake form located on our website. Parent Consultations
On occasion, parents may desire a consultation without their child to discuss parenting issues or other issues pertaining to their child. This should be discussed in advance with Kathleen Nadeau to make a mutual decision about whether or not the child or adolescent should be involved in the consultation. Just as for a child or adolescent consultation, non-returnable copies of all medical, psychological and educational records pertinent to the parent’s concerns should be sent to Kathleen Nadeau by FAX or mail at least one week in advance of the consultation. Parents of young adults may find a consultation useful as they struggle to find the appropriate level of structure and support to provide to their son or daughter as they make a transition to independent living. Adult Consultations
Your consultation will be much more productive if you outline in advance the concerns and questions that you hope will be addressed in the course of the consultation. Please send information and records regarding any previous ADHD assessment or diagnosis and complete our Adult Intake Form found on this website under “Appointments”. Consultation follow-up
Kathleen Nadeau is not able to engage in ongoing treatment with a client that schedules a one-time consultation. If the client lives in the Baltimore/Washington metro area, Dr. Nadeau can make a referral to one of her colleagues, as appropriate, as either the Crofton or Silver Spring offices of the Chesapeake ADHD Center. If the client lives at a distance, Dr. Nadeau will make referrals in those cases where she may happen to know a qualified professional in that area, or will provide advice on how to go about finding the best clinician in or near the client’s home. Consultation Report If the client wishes a letter or report to be written summarizing the results and recommendations of the consultation, there will be an additional charge for this letter or report based on the time required to write it (typically ½ to 1 hour). Phone consultations:
Phone consultations are much less desirable than in-person consultations, but, in some instances, can be scheduled when there is no realistic possibility of coming for an in-person consultation. No diagnosis or diagnostic assessment can be made through a telephone consultation, however, it may be possible to conduct a useful phone consultation regarding specific issues such as transition to college, college choice, career questions, or advice about what types of assessments and services to seek in your geographic area. Phone consultations are charged at the same hourly rate as in-person consultations with a minimum of 1 hour.
